Time machine error AFP

I try to setup Time Machine on my 10.7.3 Macbook Pro. When starting the backup, the following error is showed:

The Network Backup Disk does not support the required AFP features.

I read and followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700.

The command

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams

shows

"Cleartxt Passwrd",

"MS2.0",

"2-Way Randnum exchange",

DHCAST128

After enabling DHCAST128 an MS2.0, it correctly shows

"Cleartxt Passwrd",

"2-Way Randnum exchange",

but when starting the time machine backup, (and at the time the error appears), it is set back to

"Cleartxt Passwrd",

"MS2.0",

"2-Way Randnum exchange",

DHCAST128

Why and how is this done? And how can I prevent this?

Thanks in advance,
Stephan van der Plas

The official documentation used to say that the only supported network backup destinations were the internal drive of a Time Capsule and a Mac AFP server running Mac OS 10.5.8 or later. That seems to have been changed, and now it says that only the devices shown in the TM preference pane (without hacking the AppleShareClient preference file) are supported:

Mac 101: Time Machine

There also used to be a technical article on the requirements for a TM server, but that seems to be gone or moved. FreeNAS would have netatalk as its AFP implementation, and that certainly won't work.
