MP4 on a G3 iBook?

Hi

I'm trying to get .mp4 video files (on an eHDD) to play on an old 500MHz G3 iBook running 10.4.11 - they were originally converted from DVD using Handbrake, on a G5 iMac where they ran quite happily. The G3 has QT 7.6.4, plus Perian, plus VLC - but nothing will play the video. I hear the audio track but the video is just blank black. Normal DVDs play AOK.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong or must I accept that this machine is too old even for MP4 video?

No dice I'm afraid, BD. The Div-X installed QT behaved just as before, while MPlayer gave this error :

Something to do with no Altivec?

I downloaded X11 ok. (I belatedly had to Force Quit the installer but it seems to be there in Utilities anyway).

I tried MPlayer again, but still got the same X11 error. This seems to be because it expects to find a X11 subdirectory in /usr, but using "ls /" in Terminal there isn't such a directory - it's X11R6.

I think I'm about ready to call it a day on this one. Can I uninstall X11? It's using half a gig of HD space I can barely spare for it.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=410962#15 - I interpret as MPlayer requiring Altivec

http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2011/06/msg00068.html - Newer versions of VLC may require Altivec? This person seemed to get VLC to work on a G3 by doing a custom compile.

Frankly, I think you're expecting too much of a G3 to really do video. Video barely started coming in with G3s and G4s were the real video machines of the day. Perhaps if you were playing 320x240 Quicktime mov format it could do it. Larger format MP4 probably requires too much processing power without Altivec. My G3 was able to play raw format I grabbed using a card, but once it was in MP4 format it couldn't play it.

Get MediaInfoMac (there may still be a free version) and see what codecs are used. I don't know about newer HB but the old one doesn't actually produce QT format, just MP4 and some others like AVI.
