how do I use my 1st gen airport express to extend my wireless network as I've just bought a new airport extreme?

You can use WDS but that is not recommended as the signal quality is reduced.

See WDS here:

Your best option, sell the older Express and buy a newer "n" version...

Then you can choose "extend" network and you are done.
