Connecting my iMac to my a/v receiver

I would like to connect my iMac to my Yamaha (a/v receiver) Aventage, purely for the itunes visualizer. Any ideas? I'm told that my Apple TV cannot handle the visualizer. Thank you.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Depending on the iMac you either have a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter to get, mini-Displayport-HDMI adapter, Thunderbolt -HDMI adapter to get. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241 lists those mini-DisplayPort Macs with built-in audio over video. Those that don't have it will need an adapter that includes a separate mini-Toslink, or minijack adapter cable that also takes video input to have HDMI out, and that plugs into the HDMI input of the receiver. Thunderbolt has audio, but not all Displayport cables work well with Thunderbolt.
