I went to use my laptop and the screen is dark and won't light up. Help

I was having problems with my laptop this morning trying to get it to work. I had to shut the lid and open it, then try and locate the shut down menu. Close the lid again and the open it to click on the shut down option. Close and open again, then click yes to shut down. Then I started it back up again and has worked fine all day, stopped so I could go and run an errand for a couple of hours. Came back to use the computer again and now it won't light up at all.

The keyboard is lit up, the apple icon on the lid is NOT lit up. I can sort of see stuff on the screen but it is so dark I can't tell what is what. Is there anything that I can do or do I need to take it in to get fixed?

Please help and thanks a bunch.
