Macbook pro 15 - three beeps of death or something else?? :s

Right, I had a Macbook Pro 15 inch for about 4 months? so not long at all, I bought it from PC World which was on display at the time (i guess that was my mistake, but was too impatient and did not want to travel to another store) and since I have had it, I have ran into numerous problems with it. Firstly, it started with my screen sometimes randomly turning blue when playing on the sims 3 - i thought this was an issue with the game and the memory of what it was taking since consisted of having all the expansion packs on, - so I deleted it, but then started to do it on my Abobe suite which I have too. In the end, I ignored it and everything was fine - actually the whole laptop was working perfectly ^^

Then a few days ago, my laptop started to work considerably slow... and everytime I logged on, it would take my straight back to the start up page to login again, it would do this about four times before finally logging me in, but when I logged in, the taskbar at the top would disappear for abit before eventually returning but then wouldn't allow me to do hardly anything e.g. if pressed on safari couldn't search on the internet. Even nearly corrupted my external harddrive! I got fed up of it so decided to do a massive reboot, so i put my installation disc in to erase the harddrive and then to install it again to only run into 'an error has been encountered' I ejected the disc (which took a few attempts) to see if there was any scratches which there was (stupid pc world using the disc before me and scratching it >_<) so i thought this was the problem but i tried continuously to install it but it still kept encountering a problem. In the end, i gave up with my 10.6.6 version installation disc i got with the laptop and decided to fork out £44.00 on a new snow leapord disc 10.6.3 (since this was the newest what i could find, and could update to 10.6 through an update? :s) anyway, i put it in and the disc would not do anything ^^ just kept beeping at me three times continuously - even if pressed alt or c button down. I tried the other disc, which was scratched - but this did not occur - just continuously encountered an error. :s..

I did ring up apple in the end, who thinks that could be a ram problem (since three beeps do usually indicate this, they said) and they are taking my laptop away hopefully asap to get it sorted (even though its highly annoying since aint even had it that long >_< and thank god for paying for apple care!!)

Anyway, after all the huge dialogue - my question is, is it actually a hardware/ram problem or could it be something else? and was my laptop suffering from symptoms of this happening when i first bought it e.g. when the screen would turn blue? Did i buy the right disc of sow leapord to install? and also, is my laptop fixable and will they charge me for repairs? :L.

From an apple noob obviously.

Jammie. 🙂

I had three beeps on my MacBook Pro I7 Early 2011 yesterday.

After trying everything I have read, re-seating the memory, resetting the NVRAM, resetting the SMC, the Pram and on power / off power I called apple support who told me it was out of warranty.

In the end I took out the Ram and replaced it with the faster ram from my iMac and guess what it burst into life and has been fine ever since.

Popped the MacBook ram into the iMac and that started three beeps. Swapped them back and the iMac started working again and the MacBook stopped.

There you go.

I ran into something similar on a 17" MBP.

This particular system had been sitting around for a couple of weeks and I was asked to reinstall the OS as the person that used it left the company. So I got out my DVDs & flash drive only to get to 3 beeps with the Apple logo on the screen when trying to install from either media.

Tried replacing memory with a complete new set and still the same problem. System wouldn't boot to the original disk image either. I thought that strange and took another tact, because when I plugged the system in, the charge light went green shortly after connecting it to power.

Thinking I might have had a bad power supply, I went looking for other power adapters and found another one.

Turns out that the power supply I was using at my desk was a 60 watt version and didn't quite have enough oomph to it. When using the 85 watt supply the system finally booted into the OS on disk.

So back to reinstallation which went normally...
