mouse will not double-click open anything

My mouse cannot left-click on anything. Cannnot open a or close a document by left clicking. It will open or close via pull-down menus and right-clicking. It also cannot select anything or drag anything. I have used several mice, no change. It all works okay when I safe-boot (restart holding down the shift key) but after regular start-up, it doesn't work anymore. Is this a virus?

I will restate. I cannot move a window by dragging. I cannot open anything by double-clicking on a file or program. I cannot select anything with my mouse, BUT I can see the cursor move around the screen. It is useless. I cannot close a file by clicking on the red button in the upper left corner. I cannot set the cursor anywhere and begin typing. I have used Macs for 17 years. This is NOT normal behavior. It stopped suddenly one day. All preferences are set to normal settings.

Phooey!!!

It has reverted to "not working" once again, and now there is no more plist to trash, and even "safe-booting" does not retsore mouse functionality even temporarily.

Again, mouse will not left click ANYTHING; won't open windows, programs, files, nuthin'.

Right click will pull down menus, like, for example, System Preferences, but i am unable to click on any icons in the window.

The ONLY way to close a window now is command-w. Nothing else works.

Question: will upgrading to Lion give me a clean slate? and ca I upgrade to lion without a mouse?

mouse will not double-click open anything
