I got mine fixed.

Hold the power button tell the unit shuts off. Then restart and before the screen starts up hit the option button. Then you get to pick from two drives. I picked the one on the right. Then got to system utility and cleaned up my disk drive permitions really I ran the full monty on the drives. Then I went back and reloaded Lion and the system is fixed.

I lost nothing so alls good.

Hope this helps.

Remember reboot with the option key held down and good luck all.

Updated Mac today. Have gone through the whole disk utility, verify and repair... no joy.

During verify i get a Warning:SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS?ARDAg ent" has been modified and wont be repaired.

I get a whole load of over "permissions differ" but these all get repaired. And everytime I restart the mac its the same Permissions that are differing.

It used to be that you could customise the type of install i.e. full install or keep seetings and files etc - but this is greyed out on lion. Pointless me thinks as I've read a few posts on this site and others that this is no longer required hence greyed out - as you can download any extras from Apple or App Store.

Glad I'm not the only one but wish we could get a fix guide. Trip to the Genius Bar me thinks!

PS. Instead of holding 'option' you can also use Command+R (from startup) for access to Lion Recovery

hey,

had the same problem after an update. disk utility and repairing permissions did not work out, so i downloaded and installed OS X in recovery, which took nearly 2 1/2 hours to download and install, download was once interrupted, installation clock showed -22 minutes until restarting. but now everything works fine, no loss of files. thanks for the help here.

great hint, if you work with whole encryption by filevault and you want to use system utility:

So while in Recovery Mode, open Terminal , locate the logical UUID (example: 111111-2222-3333-444444444444 ) of the disk to unlock.

"diskutil coreStorage list" will give you the UUID. After that you can unlock the drive with:

"diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <YOUR_UUID>"

You will be asked for the Filevault password and yes, this prompt will accept your passwd if you type it right, at least you can test and see what you type in terminal while not in the password prompt.

Your drive will now be unlocked. You can now proceed with menus to reinstall Lion, reinstall from Time Machine, or use the Disk Utility......

worked great for me. also keep in mind, that after downloading OS X, before installation mode, your keyboard is set to US. i wondered for like 5 minutes what's wrong with my password...😉

Followed this 'opt' process. Got many permission errors, finally 'Permissions repair complete'. I then opted to 'verify' disc (micros ponce icon).

Many errors...incorrect number of file hard links, directory item count, volume needs minor repair for orphaned blocks, blah blah. "this disc needs repai....click repair"

I did.

Several messages including 'orphaned file inode (id = 6306494)

"the volume Mac HD was repaired."

I restarted. Spinning wheel.....no go.

Used Opt key restart again, and chose to reload Lion. Couple hours later....will post update.

Flier Soon, you are a god. That fixed my system. (I was letting my iMac update itself last night, and it took so long, I got frustrated and just turned it off - big mistake, would not reboot). I only found this post to fix it, because I found another post that told me to (I can't even remember now, I think...) hold Command V maybe, which showed all that fun text stuff on the screen like old fashion computers, and at the bottom, I could read the Bootstapper message, googled that, and found this thread. Thank god I did not have to load my iMac up and drive to an Apple store. Thanks you to Flier Soon for the fix above. Wow. Signed, Bill in Reston.
