Q: Isight gives black screen.

MBP 2010, bought in July. Running snow leopard 10.6.8. The built-in isight is not working with Photo booth and Skype, but is working perfectly with the FaceTime app. isight does show up in system profiler under USB high speed Bus. In Photo booth and Skype the green light does not turn on and there is only a black screen. Also in Photo booth, after the count down the picture is snapped but it is a black screen again.

plese help!

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), isight

    (1) Uninstall (follow Skype's uninstall instructions) Skype.  Then restart Mac, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, and then test Photo Booth again. Follow the suggestions in Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 article.

    (2) If Photo Booth still fails in your normal login account, try in another user account.  Create a new user account if you do not have one, but do NOT use the "Guest" account for this test.

    (3) If Photo Booth works in the new account but not the old, you can log back into the old account and reset your Photo Booth preferences to see if that corrects the Photo Booth problem there.

If you need help resetting preferences, here is how:

Do NOT launch Photo Booth.  Quit the app if it is already running.

Navigate to your User Home/Library/Preferences folder.

Delete (move to trash) the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist file there.

Launch Photo Booth and test its operation.

    (4) Once you have Photo Booth working again, you can install the latest Skype compatible with your system.

    (5) If the above does not help you get it working, post back the results you got when you tried each of the above.  We will offer specific suggestions based on the details in your reply.

    Thanks for the reply!

I uninstalled Skype, restarted the Mac, and used disk utility to repair permissions, yet Photo Booth fails. Next I created a new user account and still Photo Booth failed.  I also tried resetting preferences but Photo Booth fails to load yet again. Again, isight still works great on FaceTime App.

    You're welcome.

Next step: use Disk Utility to verify your disk and repair it if necessary.

If disk repair is not needed, or if repairing the disk does not correct the problem,  post back and:

    (1) confirm that the problem exists while trying to launch Photo Booth from the application itself (in your Mac's Finder > Go > Applications folder) rather than trying  ONLY from an alias (in the Dock or elsewhere.)

    (2) If Photo Booth still will not launch from the Photo Booth application itself, also tell us whether you ever had it working and whether you have a Time Machine backup from that time.

    (3) Finally, tell us whether you have added additional Photo Booth effects or otherwise modified, moved, or deleted any of your Mac's files associated with Photo Booth.

Based on your next response, we will offer additional suggestions if needed.
