My hard drive was changed recently and since then I have been unable to open old backs ups on my Time Machine everytime i try to open a folder it tells me "The Folder "Music" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents" how can I change this?
If anybody can help it will be appreciated.
Do you have more than one user account on your Mac? If so, try restoring in the other account(s), then copy the files to the home folder of the account you want them in.
I'm the only user.
Does your account have the same name that it had when you made those backups?
Do you have access to your existing Music folder?
My existing music folder is accessable.
When I go to a backup before my hard drive was replaced I would double click on a particular date and then follow through to a folder called "Macintosh HD" and then I would follow that through to "Users" then access my folder (the only other folder is "Shared" which is empty) and after that all folders are now unaccessable. If I access a backup I completed after my hard drive was replaced the folder that was originally titled "Macintosh HD" has now changed names to "Hard Drive" and then again I would follow through to "Users" where there are now three folders, mine (name has not been changed), Shared and User (all the folders within this folder are also unaccessable).
Use Migration Assistant to import the backup data to a new user account. Excruciatingly detailed instructions (for Lion) are here:
If you're only interested in the Music folder, select only that in Migration Assistant.
Once you've created the new user account, you'll log into it (with the same password you use now) and move the Music folder into the Public folder. Log out of the new account and back into your existing account. Copy the Music folder or its contents from the new user's Public folder to your home folder. You can then delete the new user account and its home folder in the Users & Groups preference pane of System Preferences.
