How do I upload photographs from my old pc onto iCloud?

I bought an ipad2 yesterday from pc world and was told that it was very easy to a upload all my old files and photos to iCloud and therefore do away with the need for a portable hard drive. I am wanting to retire my old pc completely but not loose my photos especially. Any help very welcome.

You don't upload them to iCloud for storage. Only the last 1000 photos will stay there for only 30 days It is to stream them back to your computer (your main photo library) and other iOS devices.

Thank you for this info. I am still confused as I was definitely told that I wouldn't need to buy a portable hard drive

Okay. Not sure how a portable hard drive fits into what you are asking...

and could use iclloud to store everything.

You cannot.

iCloud is used to sync your calendars, contacts, photos & bookmarks.

In addition, you can backup your iDevice and you get an email account if you wish.

As previously stated, Photos Stream will put photos from your iDevice thru iCloud to your computer and other iDevices & AppleTV but they are not stored there permanently. Only the last 30 days/1000 photos.

You cannot view them on iCloud.

And if you buy a portable hard drive, but retire your computer, there is no way for those to connect. You do need a cloud option. Sugarsyn will work. Drop box will work. Both are free. iCloud will store your music and apps, but not photos beyond what Chris said. If you put tham on a hard drive, they are stuck there until you find another computer to hook it up to.

If you want to use them or download them to your pad, you need a cloud solution.
