REFURBISHED MacBook Pro FROM www.gainsaver.com

I BOUGHT A REFURBISHED MacBook Pro FROM GAINSAVER.COM ON 11-7-11 ON 2-5-12 THE DISPLAY AND KEYBOARD BACKLIGHTS STOPPED. CALLED THEM WAS TOLD CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE. OKAY. DID THAT. NEXT DAY MY IP WAS BLOCKED TO KEEP ME FROM LOGGING IN TO Y ACCOUNT. CALLED, I COULD TALK TO SALES, GO FIGURE, BUT SALES COULDN'T CONNECT ME TO CUSTOMER SERVICE. I ASKED FOR THEM TO SEND ME THE MANUAL, MEGASAFE POWER CORD AND START-UP DISK THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE BOX AND WASN'T, QUOTED SOME STUFF ABOUT HOW THEIR COMPUTERS ARE BUILT BY CERTIFIED APPLE TECHS, AND WAS TOLD EMAIL IT TO ME, I SAID OKAY AND THEN WAS TOLD YOU KNOW WHAT FORGET ABOUT IT. BY THE SALES REP. THEN MY MOM TALKED TO THE SALEMAN WAS PUT ON HOLD. IN THE TIME I LOG INTO MY ACCOUNT FROM A COMPUTER OTHER THAN MINE ONLY TO SEE IT SAID MY CUST SERV REQUEST HAD BEEN SOLVED WHEN IT WASN'T. DEAR MOM ON HOLD, SAID I BET U GET ALOT OF COMPLAINTS.

CALLED APPLE AND WAS TOLD THERES SOMETHING FUNKY GOING ON WITH THE DATE WHEN I GAVE THEM THE SERIAL NUMBER. GLAD I DIDN'T BUY THE EXTENDED WARRENTY THROUGH GAIN SAVER.

THE ABOUT IS THE SHORT VERSION TO ALL THIS. I THEN FILED A FTC COMPLAINT.

I WILL NOT GIVE UP ON MY Mac. MFR ERROR USER ERROR NOT SURE. ONE THING THAT IS SURE GAIN SAVER IMPLIED A WARRENTY OF

MORE THAN SIX MONTHS ON THE WEBSITE, WHICH BY THE WAY THEY DIDN'T SHIP THEIR TERMS AND CONDITIONS EITHER.

Gainsaver has a bad reputation dating back many years. You can find complaints in many places, such as in this thread on DealMac:

http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?9,2537348

They are not Apple-authorized in any way so Apple is not at fault and can do nothing to help in this matter. If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company and let them know you received faulty and missing goods and wish to dispute the charge. You can also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau; they seem to have a file on the company dating back to 2006:

http://www.la.bbb.org/business-reviews/Computer-Dealers-Retail/Gain-Saver-in-Sig nal-Hill-CA-100035353

though BBB seems to consider any response from the company to be a "resolution" even if the response is inadequate.

Good luck getting your difficulties handled.

Regards.

In addition to what Ogelthorpe has said, it doesn't appear that Gainsaver is affiliated in any way with Apple. They don't even pretend to be an authorized Apple service provider or reseller, and they keep their physical location a secret on their website. Any fly-by-night outfit can set up shop "refurbishing" used Apple products, which can mean anything from giving them a careful going-over and testing and replacing all damaged parts to perfunctorily blowing the dust off them. They are then free to sell the products to anyone who is incautious enough to buy. If Gainsaver is not an authorized Apple service provider, they don't have access to new Apple parts with which to replace bad ones, and they may or may not have any competent, Apple-trained technicians to work on the machines they sell. The runaround you and your mother have gotten and the difficulty of learning anything about the company speak volumes about how little you should trust them and how unwise it was to buy from them. We can't help you and Apple can't help you. I'm afraid you're on your own.

Filing a complaint with the FTC was a good idea, but it probably won't get you anywhere soon. If your city, county or state has a public consumer advocate's office, contact it and ask for advice. If you are ever able to get anything from Gainsaver, make sure it's a cash refund, not an exchange for another piece of junk or a store credit.

If you post on this or any other online forum again in the future, please don't type in ALL CAPS. That's considered to be "shouting," but more importantly, it makes your messages hard to read.
