Unresponsive Pages

Recently I have frequently been getting the message "the following pages have become unresponsive" with the option to kill or wait. This happens when I'm surfing my email folders and when I'm surfing web sites. Doesn't make any difference which browser I"m using (Safari, Chrome or Firefox). It's extremely irritating. Does anyone know how to fix this?
