iMessage hang-ups

I sometimes find it infuriating when I am having a imessage conversation with someone and the imessage suddenly stops. Or I send an imessage and it takes hours to get to the other person. We are messaging iphone/ipad to iphone/ipad. Does anyone else have these problems or am I doing something silly. I am usually chatting from Australia to USA.
