Numbering 1, 1.1, 1.2 etc

please could someone tell me if I can set up a numbering system starting at 1 then next para 1.1 and so on. It doesn't appear to be an option in styles and I cannot import the styles from a word document.

Any answers please?

Cheers,

Phil

I've opened an AppleWorks file with this outline style & Pages recognized it as a variant of Legal. I have since created a new Pages document & used the Legal list style to achieve this. Try opening a Word document that has the style you want in Pages & save it as a Pages file Then, in a new Pages document, go to Format > Import Styles... & locate this file you have saved & import the styles you want from there. I haven't had much luck with doing this from a Word document, though. So, I have saved a blank copy of my document with these styles as a template & put a copy on my iDisk. The file is named legal style.template. Put it in your Pages templates folder in HD > Users > [your account] > Library > Application Support > iWork > Pages > Templates > My Templates. If you haven't previously saved a template in Pages, you won't find these folders. The easiest way to get them in the right place, in the right order with the right names (otherwise Pages can't find them) is to save a document as a template & the folders will be created. You can always delete that first file. Or you can double-click my template & re-save it as a template.

Thanks, for your reply, Peggy.

I have opened a word document in pages and saved it but the styles are not coming with it. I have opened your template off your iDisk but the format appears as 1, 2, 3 etc rather than 1 1.1 1.2 etc. Am I doing something wrong? In the list of number options 1.1, 1.2 etc is not there. Surely there must be a way of doing this?

Any further thoughts?

This is very odd. When I tried the document where I had used these styles, they worked well. All I did was delete the text & save it as a template. If you don't mind seeing the minutes from my church's annual meeting, I can send you a copy of the document. If you click my name in blue next to this post, you will see my public e-mail address in the "biography" section. Send me an e-mail with the subject of Pages legal style & I'll send the document to you.

I've been playing with this some this evening. I can get the font size changes I set for each level of indent, but it doesn't indent. As soon as I increased the indent level using the button on the tool bar, the number changed to the next sub-level number. I haven't worked with using the list styles, so I might be able to change it there. I'll see what I can do this weekend.

But, after all of this, I think that you can achieve what you're looking for by just applying the legal list style then indenting either with the tool bar button, the Format > Text menu or ⌘]. I have used keyboard commands for this in AppleWorks for years & I think it's just a little easier there. I can create a new line using ⌘ L or ⌘ R, putting the new line less or more indented. The indent level of an existing line can be changed with keyboard commands, similar to Pages ⌘ ⇧ L or ⌘ ⇧ R.
