Q: How do I buy an app and gift it to a friend

All articles I found said that "Apple has added 'gift this app'" to the APP STORE (NOT iTunes Store – which is what you googled). My latest version of the OS and App Store do not have this option. Thus, I'm here looking for an answer.

Perhaps you should look again. It is there, in the upper right corner of the app's page ("Gift this App"). Can't say when it was added, but it is there as of iOS 5.1.1. If you do not see it, check your iOS version and upgrade if you are not current.
