Lion 10.7.3 update problems (does not want to start again)

Dear reader,

I have downloaded the Lion 10.7.3 update and It got stuck. I have cancelled the installation and now my macbook pro cannot get started anymore, he keeps showing the starting up sign.

I do not have a Lion startup disk because I have downloaded it from the app store. However I do have the Snow lepard installation disk and I use a Time machine for back up. By the way my Macbook pro has two hard disks.

What is the best that I can do? I can install snow lepard again on the harddisk that I use as the operating system and app disk, however it indicates that I will loose all data on that harddisk. There is an option to install snow lepard on the second harddisk. However I do not want to have two operating systems on my computer.

Does anyone know if you can download an Lion OSX start up file from the appstore. Perhaps If I can get that I can use an USB stick to reinstall Lion OSX.

I can use all the advise that I can get.

regards,

Peter

Have you tried restarting to the Recovery Disk? Command+R on startup.

Hi Adam,

You are right I can restart my MBP with the Command R function.. This was very helpfull, however I now have several options (1) Run disk utility, (2) Install Lion OSX (3) Restore from time machine and (4) Consult the internet. I have run disk utility and apparantly my harddisk is fine (no problems).

I can install Lion OSX again, however this only on my second hard disk, the first one is locked and cannot be overwritten. I don't know why that is, but is it not convenient. I am now consulting the internet for tips. Another option is to recover data from my time machine. This is perhaps the best option, but i have not looked into that in much detail.

What would be the best?

OK - good that the disk is OK.

I would now run the Install Lion. I'm not sure which of the two disks it is offering to install on, but suspect that it wants to install on the disk that had Lion on it before. However, as you have a Time Machine backup, that could be a good route, and then try the update again.

I guess it's up to you depending on how confident you are with where it wants to install and what might get erased.

Alas, the problem lies with poor code from Apple. Or at least a lack of testing prior to release.

I am fortunate that I had a full backup made prior to this "Fatal Update" conundrum.

I use a gem of a product called Superduper (you could use Time Machine) to make an off-site copy on an external 500gb drive, so that I can recover rather than have to do a clean install of Lion (even if I get robbed.....which has happened).

This is the second time I have had an update go pear-shaped like this and it is really disappointing having to recover.

I hope you don't have to do a complete re-install (ring and pester them until you exhaust them), as this is Apple's negligence here.

Oh, if you read the fine print on the install pack, you have no right of reply and, if you don't like it they can "Un-License" you completely.

Good luck.

Tony

PS take my advice and make yourself a back-up .....ALWAYS!

Hi Tony,

I have made an backup. Normaly I make a back up every couple of months. This is of course ia not the best procedure but I did not like my time machine making backups every couple of hours.

On wednesday I came back from a business trip and performed the update to 10.7.3. What i did not know is that I did not turn my Time Machine off while making the latest backup. So to my surprise when I tried the option of restore from Time-machine my latest back up was from a couple of minutes before I tried to perform the update.

The restore from the time Machine worked excellent and everything is working again as it should be. I will try to upgrade to the Lion 10.7.3 version later. I do not trust it at the moment, and I will leave my Time Machine on 🙂

Hi Adam,

I have chosen for the Time Machine restore. It worked perfect. I am not sure If I will perform the update again at this moment. My intuition say that there might be something wrong with it. Especially for people that did not perform a clean install off Lion. I upgraded from OSx 10.5.2 to Snow Lepard and then to Lion.

Thank you for your comments

I had the same problem with my Mac Book Pro freezing about 95% through the update while moving items into place. Letting it sit overnight did not help. I am now in the process of using Time Machine to recover to a checkpoint from yesterday.

My MBP OS an Oct 11 version that came with Lion installed. I won't be running this update in the near future until Apple states they fixed the problem.

I had the same exact problem on my early 2011 15 in MacBook Pro. I use an awesome product known as Time Capsule which allowed me to recover everything after this rather large hiccup with the update. I am also going to wait a little while before attempting this update again as 10.7.2 has proven to be extremely solid.

However, if you must update (perhaps you want to try the iMessage Beta) you can go to Support/Downloads and download OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (client combo) which I was instructed to do when I called Apple about this issue.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this problem might be exclusive to MacBook Pro owners who upgraded from Snow Leopard as both my girlfriends late 2011 13in MacBook Pro and my mid 2011 iMac (Both with Lion preinstalled) had no issues what-so-ever.
