I, currently, use an ATI 9600 PC/Mac edition 256 MB card in this Mac.
It's performance is okay for most things except for 720p video.
I know it will never be possible for this old workhouse to view and play 1080p video, but I am on the hunt
For a better card that may get me better streaming and playback of 720p video as well as better/faster capatibilty on
OS X 10.5.8.
G4 MDD 1.25 Ghz SP CPU, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.5.8), ATI 9600 graphics

On my DP, dual bootable, April, 2004 MDD G4 I've had an AGP mutant, flashed nVDIA GeForce 7800 GS with 256 MB driving two 22" high-end CRTs. Couldn't be happier.

Can these cards be used in a G4 without alteration?
I take it this is a Flashed PC version?
Is it 8x AGP, or 4x/2x AGP?

G4 Mirrored Drive Door (MDD) 4x AGP
G4 FireWire 800 (FW800) 4x AGP
G5 Tower 8x AGP
That card is a flashed FireGL X3.
It's the only R420 chip based PC card to yield DVI output when flashed.
Flashed X800 cards are the only ones that are available for G4 machines.
That and the Geforce 7800 GS are the two top cards for the MDD.

Well , I bought this flashed for Mac FireGL X3 card.
I opened it and had some instructions and a few new wrinkles to the equation.
Does this particular card need additonal power from the power supply?
If so, where does this plug into?
Is the MDD power supply able to handle extra powering of a video card?
Also, the instructions mention using this card with a PCI slot cooler?
Are these cheap and where can I purchase, easily either from electronics chain or internet?
Can this card be used without it or the temps inside the MDD be too high.
I have never installed a video card with these types of requirements before.
My experience with video cards is , usually, plug and play made for Mac cards.
I am not a newbie to doing Mac hardware upgrades, but this is all new territory for me.
Can the slot cooler be placed in any open PCI slot?
Does it have to be near the video card?
Where does this plug in to get power to the fan?
Will I have to move PCI cards around to install the slot cooler?
Will this fan make my MDD even more noisier than it is now.
The MDD's regular fans never power down.
Need some help from all of you and maybe some procedures and pics of an actual installation.
Thought this would be a easy quick upgrade, but it's not looking that way, now.
I feel a little like the typical Windows PC tinkerer at this point.

This card is an X800XT 256 MB VRAM for G4, G5.
Card number is 630452050296.

Yes.

Pull it from a hard drive power connector or use a Molex splitter if all are in use.

Optional, but due to the MDD being a hot beast not a bad idea.

YMMV. Depends on how hot the MDD runs and how far overclocked the X3 is.

This ain't a Mac card. It's a hacked for Mac card. Things are different on the dark side, and usually a lot faster.....

Doesn't matter. It's there to help with the MDD heat issues.

Same as the graphics card with the same answer regarding PSU ability, etc., etc.

The linked PCI cooler isn't loud, and the X3 is only loud running full tilt.
The MDD's regular fans never power down.
Doe you use CHUD and Nap mode? If not, your wrong.....

I keep hoping that these forums will work better, when accessing this part of the Apple Support forums, with iPad, but still aren't seeing this.
One other annoying thing is when I want to reply to a thread and have to log in, instead of taking me back to the thread or post I was on, it dumps me back to the list of all the various Apple products discussions page and I have to find my way back to where I was before I can reply.

One would think that Apple would make these forums work better on their flagship device, but, it seems that someone doesn't see the necessity of nor the irony of the failure of the forum software to run the same on the iPad.....
The forum isn't even Flash driven, so that's no excuse.

While I have your attention. I have 1 PCI slot left to use for the slot fan and I ordered the slot fan from the link you sent me. Should be here witnin a week.
Another thing about this video card. I read in another forum post is that the gold #3 and #11 pins at the bottom of the card need to be taped over.
Is this correct? Which side of the board do I tape over the pins?
Do I only tape one side of these pins?
And which direction to count so I can cover the right ones.
Is this easy to do?
What tape works best?
Also, does it matter where I plug the graphics card molex connector into?
I mean, does it need to connect to a spare molex coonector that is part of my MDD's power supply or canit be any spare or loose connector I can plug into.
I guess once I learn how to do all this, it'll be another upgrade I'll know how to do in the future on another newer Mac, at some point.

Pins 3 and 11: When and why you need to disable them, and how to do it.
Fan side down, count as shown in the article.
I cut small slivers of tape and apply using forceps and a finger tip.
I don't like to cut on the graphics board.
The tape needs to cover the wide part of the contact, not necessarily the entirety of the narrow portion.
As for power, any spare or otherwise connector (read ANY connector) is fin.
