Can PCI cards be used in newer G5 PowerMacs?

I have a few PCI cards that I would still need to have if I decide to upgrade my old G4 to a "newer" G5.

They are FW and USB 2.0 cards, as well as a PCI SCSI card that I use for an older, but very expensive large format UMAX scanner.

Are these cards transferable and work in a G5?

How about the graphics card from my G4, too!

Can this be used in a G5.

I am interested in purchasing a dual CPU 2.5 Ghz G5.

Want to know if any of my cards from my ole' G4 can be swapped and still work.

Thanks to everyone who responds, in advance.

G4 MDD 1.25 Ghz SP CPU, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.5.8), ATI 9600 graphics

None of the cards would work in the later PCIe G5s, but likely in the PCI or PCI-X/X2 models.

PCI Express slots are not compatible with PCI or PCI-X expansion cards.

Which Power Macintosh G5 models have PCI, PCI-X, and PCI Express slots?

In case you should end up with a later PCI-express G5, I'd point out that I was fortunate to find a brand-new, old-stock SCSI card at an attractive price at overstock.com after japamac pointed me to it, also in order to run a large format scanner with tabloid-size trnasparency lid.

2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 1,700MHz 512MB VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" CRT monitors; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units.

Following the last one of BDAqua's links above, I eventually ended up at a page containing this, which is 100% consistent with my experience:

For those unconcerned by price, the top of the line Power Macintosh G5 "Quad Core" (2.5) (Late 2005) is probably the best option for long-term legacy use. It's the fastest Power Macintosh G5 that will ever be made, has a better liquid cooling system than earlier models, supports 16 GB of RAM, has PCI-Express slots (PCIe), and can be "hacked" to use more than the two officially supported number of hard drives with third-party products. It also shipped with a video card with dual DVI ports, instead of the proprietary ADC port, so one can upgrade to a second display at lower cost (assuming one does not already own an older Apple display with an ADC port). No doubt a Power Macintosh G5 "Quad Core" (2.5) with 16 GB of RAM, five hard drives, and dual displays would provide years of solid performance particularly when using applications optimized for the PowerPC 970MP (G5) processor.

Prices of the G% Quads have fallen considerably.

Thanks Guys!

I knew you'd have the answers for me.

So, I guess if I want to continue to try and use all of my PCI FW or USB 2 cards and my SCSi card, I'll need to settle on using an earlier G5. I forgot ,too, that I am, also, using a PCI wireless adapter card with an extended antenna.

Any recommendations for a better video card for the G5?

Something I do not have to flash the RAM to work.

I don't use OS 9 any longer and I do not own a PC.

Thanks, again!

:)

Thanks for the additonal info Ramón!

I posted my reply before I'd seen your update!

I think I am going to go for the 2.5 Ghz G5 after all.

If I need to upgrade things like my SCSI card, I'll check out links to see if I can find a the card you have in your G5.

Plus, update the video card, too, if necessary.

I am eyeballing a 2.5 Ghz G5 with 12 GBs of RAM, Bluetooth and Aiport cards installed from Apple reseller PowerMax.

They have a six month warranty available that I would like to have in case the Mac has issues when I decide to purchase. I'll pay more, I know, but feel I am paying for both service on the Mac and piece of mind if something should fail, like the power supply or cooling system, within this six month window.

For the Quad, you'll want either a Radeon X1900 or a flashed Geforce 7800 GTX if you are serious about performance.

The 512 MB 7800 GTX can run a little dear, but is, hands down, the fastest card available for the PCIe G5.

They run around $230 on eBay for ready to use. Vanilla, 512 MB PC versions are getting very rare.... and command top dollar when available.

There are flashed X1900 cards on eBay for around $90...... not bad.
