Can PCI cards be used in newer G5 PowerMacs?

None of the cards would work in the later PCIe G5s, but likely in the PCI or PCI-X/X2 models.

PCI Express slots are not compatible with PCI or PCI-X expansion cards.

Especially for the SCSI, you'll likely want to stay with the 2004 or early 2005 AGP graphics model G5's.

Otherwise, the late 2005 G5's can't use your cards.

FYI, the 2.5 GHz machines (AGP or PCIe) are all LCS equipped. The Early 2005 2.7 GHz machine is also LCS equipped.

In case you should end up with a later PCI-express G5, I'd point out that I was fortunate to find a brand-new, old-stock SCSI card at an attractive price at overstock.com after japamac pointed me to it, also in order to run a large format scanner with tabloid-size trnasparency lid.

For those unconcerned by price, the top of the line Power Macintosh G5 "Quad Core" (2.5) (Late 2005) is probably the best option for long-term legacy use. It's the fastest Power Macintosh G5 that will ever be made, has a better liquid cooling system than earlier models, supports 16 GB of RAM, has PCI-Express slots (PCIe), and can be "hacked" to use more than the two officially supported number of hard drives with third-party products. It also shipped with a video card with dual DVI ports, instead of the proprietary ADC port, so one can upgrade to a second display at lower cost (assuming one does not already own an older Apple display with an ADC port). No doubt a Power Macintosh G5 "Quad Core" (2.5) with 16 GB of RAM, five hard drives, and dual displays would provide years of solid performance particularly when using applications optimized for the PowerPC 970MP (G5) processor.

Prices of the G% Quads have fallen considerably.

Note that the G5 Quad already has USB 2, FW 400 and FW 800 built in.

For the Quad, you'll want either a Radeon X1900 or a flashed Geforce 7800 GTX if you are serious about performance.

The 512 MB 7800 GTX can run a little dear, but is, hands down, the fastest card available for the PCIe G5.

They run around $230 on eBay for ready to use. Vanilla, 512 MB PC versions are getting very rare.... and command top dollar when available.

There are flashed X1900 cards on eBay for around $90...... not bad.

( just bought Graphics card 7800GTX from ebay and its coming from a PC machine )

The problem is I would like to get hold of the correct Nvidia 7800 GTX 512 ROM

Can anyone please help me – I would be really appricated it

Can you also tell me if I need to “Flash it” - I have no idea of what this means or how to do it - this is major help ???

If it's a PC card that is NOT advertised as Mac compatible, then it needs flashed (ROM replaced with Mac ROM).
