Feb 9, 2012 4:49 PM in response to Tony Gayby sschicago,I ran a disk utility and verified disk and it says appears to be ok.
I dont see anywhere in system preferences how to delete final cut pro x preferences and I can't get into the program to do it. On that link you sent, it has prefrences manager and remove - which one do I download? If I do this or remove or uninstall, won't I lose my projects and events?
Will that help since Imovie also wont open it seems like it has to be something with the system, doesnt it?

Feb 9, 2012 5:18 PM in response to sschicagoby Tony Gay,So application preferences are not a part of the System prefences and need to be removed either manually or by using an app like DR's.
OK, use the app at this link, AND read the overview on the page.

Let us now how you go, as if this does not help there are then a number of other steps that may help.

No - your projects and media etc will be absolutely safe.
We all use some way of trashing our preferences as Apple can't seem to be bothered to include a similar facility within the application - or within legacy FCP for that matter.

Feb 13, 2012 7:47 PM in response to andynickby sschicago,I tried this and trashed the preferences but I still get same problem. It says it needs to update projects to work with this version but just wont. It spins forever - even left it for 2 days. I finally force quit, restart and try again. same problem.

Feb 14, 2012 2:42 AM in response to sschicagoby andynick,Sam, it seems you might have a corrupt file or media somewhere and it's causing FCP X to crash.
Using Finder, move your Events and Projects to new (temporary) folders, so that FCP X doesn't find them on launching.
If the app launches OK. shut it down again, and then move one project back to the exact position it was before and launch again. If the app launches, your media will be offline, but don't worry. Close FCP X again, and move ONE of the Events for that project back to its original position and launch again.
If FCP X updates and opens the Event correctly, try one more Event - and so on until you find the offending Event that's causing the crashes.
Now you need to isolate the media in the Event and bring one or two files back into play until you identify the culprit.

Feb 15, 2012 10:39 PM in response to sschicagoby andynick,Check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
