Lion breaks Java applets; any way to get them to work again?

Under Lion, there are lots of Java applets that I can't get to work. For instance, most of these just show solid white:

I can tell that they're loading, because a few of them produce console output I can see in Java Console. Also, a few of them display some GUI elements. But mostly, they're blank. I've encountered lots of other applets, not Java3D, which also don't work. There's a lot of code rot going on due to Apple abandoning Java on the Mac and Oracle not picking it up.

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of any tweaks I could make to the system to get these to work.

I do, of course, have Java applets enabled in Java Preferences.

Thanks!
