Q: Just did security update, but not in list of updates?

Hello,

My mac just told me to install a security update and restart and i did it because its a security update, but when I logged back in and checked the official list for updates (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222), there are no official security updates for around the 10th of febuary. What should I do, is this bad? Is it a virus or hack?

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Go to System Preferences>Software Update>Installed Software. What's the update? The latest Snow Leopard update was Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 Also, If this is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, from the Menubar>Go>Go to Folder, enter "/private/var/db/receipts" (no quotation marks.) Scroll through looking for February 10, 2012. You should find

    com.apple.pkg.update.security.2012.001.snowleopard.1.1.plist

BTW, your information doesn't make any sense. You can't possibly be running OS 8.6. Did you mean 10.6.8?

How often do you have the Software Update system preference set to check for updates? The most recent one has a release date of Feb. 1 (& is probably what you got) but Software Update won't tell you about it until your Mac checks for it. If you have not set it to check automatically, or set it to a monthly check, this could explain what you saw.

BTW, you should see the list of updates in the "Installed Software" tab of the Software Update system preference if you don't want to go looking for receipt files.

If this is Snow Leopard, in that same location you should also see

Yes. All that looks OK. There were two security updates. The first one was buggy, so a v1.1 was released a few days later. If you have SU set to check weekly, that would explain the delay in seeing the notification for the second one.

BTW, next time just use the camera icon in the toolbar above your reply window to post a screenshot.
