i keep getting the message please us itunes to sync music to this ipod. I'm trying but nothing is recording...

I just purchased an apple ipod shuffle. I installed the latest itunes and selected 20 songs. I keep getting the message 'please use itunes to sync music to this ipod. What am I missing ??
