Internal and external HD getting full.

My external HD is full using time machine and my internal HD is getting full can I reformat this external HD and split my file between my external and internal and use time machine on a new big external HD and back them both up?

Absolutely.

The only thing would be to make sure the drive is formatted correclty (OSX Extended Journaled is preferred), and remove the external drive from the "exceptions" list in the time machine back preferences.

Excellent! Thanks so much!

I was hoping this would work because my dilemma, as I stated before, was both my internal and external HDs were getting full and it seemed crazy to have to purchase a bigger internal and external HD and basically discard the existing one's. This way I just add to my storage with my old external and don't have to replace these two. Then just buy one big 2TB external and back them both up. This should keep me covered for a while. Is this the preferred build out with storage for most iMac users? What's your recommendation?
