Why won't my Imation SuperDisk Drive mount?--HELP, I'M SO FRUSTRATED!!!!!

I have a Graphite G4 which I purchased in 2000, and I am now running OS X 10.3.9 and 9.2.2. I have an Imation Superdisk Drive (the 2nd version, ice color USB) that I bought at the same time. This drive will not mount 9 times out of 10. And when it does mount, it doesn't stay mounted for long. To have any hope of it mounting, I have to unplug the drive and leave it unplugged for hours, and it usually will still not mount.

The drive is getting power, because when I insert a disk I hear the drive working, but the light will not come on and the disk will not mount. What is the problem here? Every time think I have figured out a trick to make it work, I'm wrong. I even plugged it directly into the wall outlet.

Am I doing something wrong or is this drive just a piece of crap? Is the drive incompatible with certain kinds of G4's? I'm so frustrated. Any help will be appreciated!
