I have a new macbook pro with iphoto '11 installed. But my iphoto library from my old macbook is '08 version, which I keep on an external drive with my 25,000 photos. How do I upgrade the iphoto library on my external drive so it is compatible with my new macbook pro?
iPhoto should be in the Applications folder.
It is your library that is on the external.
So upgrade iPhoto on your system disk.
When you start it the first time if needed be it will do any upgrades to the library as required.

thank you. so when I open iphoto, i typically hold the option key down and point to the library on the external drive. Are you saying I should simply do the same thing from my new computer with new version of iphoto and it will automatically work? i don't need to do anything to the external drive?
Apart from make a back up first, no.
