My iPhone 3GS wont charge properly. Displays 'Charging is not supported by this accessory' error message on every port plugged into and even sometimes unplugged

My iPhone 3GS wont charge. I have plugged it into mulitple ports tried different cables and tried cleaning the port and cable but no success. Sometimes it will start to charge briefly (like a few seconds) Then the message comes up again. Sometimes nothing is even plugged in and it still displays the message. Oddly enough it will still update and sync but refuses to charge. What is the issue? Battery? Solution?

It certainly isn't a battery issue, not sure how anyone would come to that conclusion.

Since multiple chargers/cables have been tried, that would tend to indicate the issue is with the dock connector. Take it to Apple or whomever provides service in your country, or, since it's out of warranty, whomever you would like to have repair/replace the dock connector.
