I run Mac OS X 10.5.8 on an silver iSight Intel iMac. Recently, I've noticed a significant loss of speed and performance from the machine: loading web pages, text entry, 'beach ball' etc. What causes this problem? How can I fix it? Will upgrading to 10.6 help bump speed?

Firstly, how much free space do you have left on your hard drive? Less than about 20GB can slow it to a crawl.
Also, how much RAM do you have & is all of it being recognized (click on About this Mac to see)?
Also, do you have a large amount of files on your Desktop?

It's amazing how this factor is often and routinely overlooked. A cluttered desktop will slow a computer to a crawl.
