Q: Aperture Server

Hi,

I was wondering if there is any way of using or installing aperture as a server point.

My idea is as follows:

I would like to see a product that will handle all my images on a fast server.

Whenever I come back from a field trip or outiside location shoot I would like to plugin my macbook in LAN and have it transfer all my new data autuomatically to the server. On the desktop I would like to see and work on the images from the shoot either after having imported them form the server or directly on the server. On the desktop I owuld like to only have one or two active projects but all other projects at hand should I ever need an image from a previous shoot.

The aim is to make the desktop aperture and macbook aperutre faster and leaner ... After several years of importing images to aperture I would like to see a faster aperture with fotostream like abilities on a LAN. Clients would be only there to get the data from the server. This way I would not need to keep to an x-amount of project on my clients!

Others may have a way for you to do this, but I think it's not really what Aperture is intended for. According to Apple:

It is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

There is a KB article related to this issue, though the links aren't working at the moment:

Dont know if youve alreay figured this out, but the lastest version (3.4.3) does this very well.  Entire libraries or just some photos, its up to you.  They can be stored on server shares or external drives that do not have to be kept connected.  The data base has thumbnails localy so if the drive is not connected you can still use the photo catalog.
