can't delete tracks from phone

The only way to delete them is by going into iTunes on your computer with your iPhone plugged in you can't delete them off your phone

I have the same problem. It's frustrating.

And sync doesn't work, as you can see from everyone else's responses. We've all tried what has been suggested here, and we all still have stuff on our phone we don't want.

Anyone for taking up a collection to put a full page ad in the New York Times telling Apple to fix its sync bugs?

just swipe right on a track for the delete box to come up.

tetra11, that I can do. But it's annoying to have to do that to each one if, when I sync, my intention is to subtract a dozen or more songs from my phone and add additional ones. I also have this problem with contacts, which multiply unbidden when I sync. Sometimes if I want to delete them I have to delete 100, one by one.

Does this screen not work for you?

Not for me. It did work fine with my old 3gs, but not with the iPhone 4. I usually uncheck all "Artists", "Genres" and "Albums", and just check different playlists I want. Then I click "Apply" and then "Sync". Lo and behold, all the new stuff is on the phone after sync, but all the old stuff that I unchecked is still there too.

The same is true for podcasts and iTunes U when I try to manage what is and what is not on the phone.
