Pages quits when I use instant alpha

I drag a photo into Pages from iPhoto and try to apply instant alpha to it. After a slight move of the colour spot in an area, the application always quits. It automatically sends a report to Apple, and I can reopen the app. But it keeps doing the same thing.

Is there any way to avoid this problem please?

Thank you , Keith

I never had that problem. Is it a large image? in Mb that is? Do you have enough Ram on the computer? Informations on your system would help.

thank you for your response furhulda.

the photos are typically 3 to 4 MB. I have 12 GB RAM. I'm running a new iMac27.

instant alpha worked the first couple of times I tried it, but since then it always quits unexpectedly the first time I try to highlight an area to make it transparent.

Would trashing the prefs help? I'm a bit relcutant to do that as I have several important documents I'm working on in Pages and I don't want to mess those up.

Any further thoughts please?

Many thanks, Keith

No harm deleting the plist file. You can put on the desktop or in the bin but you don't have to delete it if you might want to put it back. PAges does create a new plist immediately. Quit Pages first though. Move/delete the plist file. start PAges again and try out the instant alpha.

You can also try it out in another user account. If it doesn't work in the new account the problem lies with Pages.

What format/origin are the photos?

What version Mac OSX and Pages '09, and where did you get your extra RAM from?

It possibly could be due to faulty memory.

Try inserting your installer DVD and start up holding the D key down, to enter diagnostics.

Run the diagnostics several times and note any error messages. If you have any contact AppleCare or your dealer.

Hi Peter, thank you for your suggestions.

The photos are all JPEG from our Canon powershot S5, imported from iPhoto 11.

I'm using Lion 10.7.3, all RAM installed by Apple when compter purchased 2 months ago. Pages 09 is version 4.1.

I'll take your ideas along to our supplier when I see him this week.

Thank you for your advice. Keith

No, it still quits. A report page opens and is automatically sent to Apple when the app is reopened, but the problem persists. Sorry, I can't help further.

Does anyone else on the forum have any ideas please? BTW I have Mountain Lion, 10.8.3 and a fast computer with lots of RAM etc, so I've no idea why this happens. Fortunatly I have other options to acheive similar effects in FCE, but many Pages users would not be able to do that.

Thank you Peter. Yes, I have 09/4.3, and the same problem occurs with another user. I have 1.55TB on HD.

It is intermittent. I tried with .tiff rather than a .jpeg image and the masking seems to hold sometimes.

I wanted to try deleting the .plist but can't locate it for Pages. I looked under Library>preferences but the list are not shown for Pages (others are there.) Thank you for the suggetsions, Keith

You are there I am here. You need to test variables.

It could be file size, it could be resolution, it could be a file format issue. It could be a bad file, these things happen.

You need to play "One of these things is not like the other" until you work out what it is.

Try it from a new User as well to see if it is a damaged .plist in your System.

thanks Peter, I'm working on some possible variables. Just now it worked perfectly. I could not get it to crash, no matter how many things I tried!

I'm a bit reluctant to mess with p-lists as I'm at a delicate stage in a book I'm writng and don't want to alter any settings just now. I'll report back when something happens. Thanks very much once again.
