There is no device in my audio in/optical digital audio in port in my iMAC desk top computer. I don't know why my sound output device is set as "digital out" recently and I cannot change it back to "internal speaker", therefore, I can not hear anything from chat or utube clip. Please help.

Sounds like the micro switch inside the output jack is stuck. Try plugging in your headphones, buds or a 3.5 mm mini jack cable and then unplug it to see if you can unstick the micro switch.

Try smc and pram reset. Also you might try using Audio MIDI Setup (in Utilities) instead of the Sound system preferences.
No luck with either of these resets. Audio MIDI Setup does show me an option for internal speakers, but it won't let me change anything to do with it.
I think you're right, den.thed , I believe the micro switch is stuck, but I haven't been able to find it. Do you have any idea exactly what part of the jack it's located in? I've been trying to find a picture without much luck.
