Go to macsales.com or crucial.com. It will guide you to memory that is compatible with your system. And will tell you how much you can actually install beyond 2 GB since some recommend more than the "minumum" 2 GB.

Both are relatively inexpensive for even large amounts of RAM.

macsales.com has install-vieos to help you replace it.

If it's just a question of memory, you can buy and install more. It could also be that your iMac is just not compatile with Lion.

Minimum requirements for Lion are:

  • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • 2GB of memory
  • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
  • 7GB of available space
  • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Your iMac came with RAM installation instructions in the user manual (it also has the specifications for the type of RAM you need). You can also find this info on Apple's website.

Most places that sell RAM offer guides for selecting the correct RAM and video instructions on how to do it.
