I wish to connect a Macintosh PowerBook 160 (very old) to a modern flat monitor. I have got the Macintosh PowerBook Video Cable that connects with one end with the Powerbook and has a sub-D 15 (two rows of holes) female connector on the other end. What kind of connection is required between the video cable and the 15-pins (three rows) of the monitor?-- Thanks for any hints, Peter

the table is helpful. Apparently the video cable I got (590-0831) is the correct one. Yet I still do not know how to connect this to a standard 3-rows, 15 pins video connector of a modern flat monitor.

I think you can hook that up to any VGA display that supports up to 256 colors/shades of gray. You might get only 8 colors or 256 shades of gray at best.
I'm going to ask a moderator move this to the older peripheral forum, just in case I'm mistaken.

If your "modern flat monitor" is a widescreen display (16:9 aspect ratio), its optimal resolution will not be supported by the PowerBook 160 and its very limited 512K of VRAM. Even if you used a Mac-to-VGA adapter to connect the display's VGA plug to the PowerBook's display cable, the onscreen result would be unacceptable. I wouldn't waste the $$ attempting to do so. Mac users with much newer and capable Power Macs having PCI graphics cards sometimes have compatibility problems with new displays.
Thank you very much. I suspected this. I found an adapter with dip switches. It costs ca. $ 100. You are right, this is not worth it. So I will put my PowerBook on my book shelf as a souvenir of bygone days. -- gmundener
