iPad 2 to hp laserjet p1102w via airprint.

I wish to print to my hp laserjet p1102w, but my ipad says no airprint printers are available. I am on wifi and everything else works. The hp is working fine.

There are two issues to make this work. One, as you have discussed, you need to upgrade the firmware so the printer is truely ready to handle AirPrint. But there's a second issue that I'm stuck on. How do you get the printer on the wireless network? If you have a wireless router that supports WPS, it's apparently easy, but Apple's routers don't support WPS because it is not considered to be a secure network protocol, despite claims to the contrary.

Apple supports WPA2, which rocks in terms of wireless security, but each device that connects needs to provide the WPA2 password in order to join the network, and guess what? Printers don't have an interface through which you can send a password. My Nintendo Wii does. My iPad does. My iPod Touch Does. All my Macs do, but my wireless printer doesn't.

So, my wireless printer is connected via Ethernet to my Apple Time Capsule and it prints fine from all my Macs, but no go for AirPrint from my iOS5 devices.

And buying a newer printer wouldn't help because none of them connect to WPA2 networks.

So, if you CAN print at home via AirPrint, you might as well prepare yourself to have your wireless network hacked by your teenaged neighbor. It's only a matter of time.

I am having exactly the same problem with an iPad (iOS 9.1) and an HP P1102w printer. Printer is connected wirelessly to router, iPad also, MacPro also. I can see and print wirelessly from the MBP to this printer but the iPad does NOT see the printer (no AirPrint Printers Found). Now to the "update firmware" issue. I cannot find anywhere on the HP site that there is an option to download and install the firmware for this printer? All I can find is the Printer Driver Software (I am currently using V6.9). Can anyone post a link to the firmware update page? I am assuming from what I've been reading that this issue (AirPint from iOS device) is mostly about having the latest firmware installed? Next question ... how do I find out what printer firmware I currently have and what is the latest firmware I should have? I have found something called Firmware Data Code which is 20101011 ....... not sure if this is the installed firmware version or not?

OK ..... updating myself.

Called HP Customer Support. Since this printer is out of warranty they wanted to charge about $30 for a support phone call. I complained and they then said they would do it for free. Long story short. It was totally due to the firmware not being current .... and here's the kicker, if you search the HP Website for this computer and go in under the OS at 10.11.x (El Capitan) you WILL NOT see a firmware update option. You have to go to a lower OSX value (at least 10.9) to get the firmware update option. This was my obstacle with :updating the firmware" ... I could;t find that option. However, then, the online tech had to do the update as the firmware update utility would not open properly (under OSX 10.11.2). In the end, once the firmware was updated, AirPrint from the iPad worked. This is a lot of crap to have to go through although this is an older printer and most probably the newer models are much easier to set up?

Old firmware was Datacode 20101011 - Updated Firmware Datacode is now 20130703
