why can't my ipod send messages

i cannot send messages on my i-pod. my aunty got it from canada and im in ireland right now. When i write my message in the send button is grey so when i press it nothing happens. I can't call anyone on facetime either. this is what i have to fill out when i press + on contacts:

last:

company:

mobile: (phone)

home: (e-mail)

ringtone: default

text tone: default

home page: (URL)

and then there are options to add new adress and add field

what do i need to fill in please help
