Q: I have a G5 2.3 OS 10.5.8 I transfered my programs from my G4 I now have problems with permissions and programs that run in G5 thinks I have a G4 and won't run. How do I fix this.

I did a fresh install of 10.5 on a G5 PPC 2.3 ghz then used a external firewire encloseure to transfer the contents of the G4 HD to the G5. The enclosure contained a backup copy of the G4. Now I don't have permissions for some programs and programs that require a G5 to run won't run because they think it is a G4. Short of eraseing the G5 and reloading everything from the CD's and reentering the serial numbers can something else be done to correct the problem. The about this Mac says it is a 2.3 running 10.5.8. Any help would be appreciated.

Did this transfer include the entire contents of the external drive including OS X? If so, then you basically replaced the fresh install you made, so you will need to start over from scratch.

How did you create the external backup? Did you just drag and drop files? Did you use a backup utility? If so, which one?

The backup was made with Carbon Copy Cloner and I used Time Machine to move the files. If the G5 was running 10.4 would that not show up in about this Mac. But the about this Mac says I am running 10.5.8.

Hold the Option/alt button down at bootup, see if the Firewire drive is a boot choice, if so try it.

Since I don't know exactly what you did I don't know. Overwriting a Leopard system with a Tiger system by just copying files will result in a probably disaster. No so bad a disaster if you used CCC to restore the backup.

I would start from scratch by reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard. Then the only thing I would restore from your backup is what's available via the Setup Assistant when you do you first reboot into Leopard after installation.

I got the drive back and connected it did the restart holding the option down and got  a lock with what looked like a space to type in and a arrow pointing to the right. Clicked on the lock nothing happened, could not type in the space clicked on the arrow nothing changed.

AHA, you have Firmware password protection in Mac OS X , disable it & try Option/alt...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

OK great, does everything run fine from the External drive?

Do you need 10.5.8 on the internal, or would 10.4.11 be fine?

Every thing works from the external HD. I have a couple of new programs that I bought that need 10.5. I had a Quicksilver dual 1ghz that would not let me install 10.5 it would just hang up so I bought this used G5 2.3 thinking I could just transfer the other programs over without any trouble and that didn't work out so well. I guess I will just have to take the time to reinstall the programs from the CD's. Some of the programs would work and others would tell me I don't have permissions to change them, even when I went in and changed the permissions it still would not work.

Well, I'd use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the Internal now, then boot from the Internal, assure that all is well, then Install 10.5.x over the Internal 10.4.11 without erasing, then...

    1058 Combo Update, 10.5.8...
