I seem to have two music libraries

...one in Music>iTunes>iTunes Music, and Music> iTunes Media> Music. Can I delete one of these, and if so which should I delete and how do I prevent this from happening again? I'm running iTunes 10.5.3, OSX 10.6.8.

Neither of these are the iTunes libraries. They are the locations of the iTunes media.

Do this...

Hold Option and launch iTunes.

Select Choose library... and select the /Music/iTunes/ folder.

Once iTunes opens, go to iTunes prefs > Adavnaced and what is listed as the iTunes media folder location?

It should be /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music.

If so...

Do you have an external drive?

Copy /Music/iTunes media/ folder to this external.

Delete /Music/iTunes media/ folder.

Unmount the external and make sure the songs in Tunes play okay.

Run the Consolidate command, which you can find at File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files. Before you run it, look in iTunes Help at the article "Consolidating your library," so you can understand what it does.

and remember: always back up before you do things like this

(carbon copy cloner, super duper, etc.)

so you can revert if things go wrong.

good luck

I do have an external drive, but that's not where any of my music files are.

I understand that.

My suggestion wast o prevent any music from beinbg deleted.

Do this...

Since your iTunes media folder is set correctly, you can File > Library > Organize library > Consolidate then simply delete /Music/iTunes media/ folder

Chris, first of all thanks for helping me with this!

I get the general idea but I want to be absolutely sure I don't delete the wrong folder.

-My iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder appears to be where any music I've added in the last year has been going. It is more complete than my iTunes/iTunes Music folder.

-The iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder also is where my podcasts etc are being filed.

-The iTunes/iTunes Music folder looks like it hasn't been accessed in over a year.

Can I simply delete the iTunes/iTunes Music folder?

Please excuse me if I'm being thick. Thank you again.

A few notes first.

iTunes default location is /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder.

Prior to iTunes 9, it was /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ folder. This folder can simply be changed from /iTunes Music/ to /iTunes media/ and eveything will work fine.

Now here's what you need to do.

  1. Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
  2. Make sure iTunes media folder location is set to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
  3. Tick Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library.
  4. Tick Keep iTunes media folder organized.
  5. Go to iTunes menu File > Library > Organize library - Consolidate. This makes sure all media files in iTunes are in the iTunes media folder location set in step 2 above.
  6. Now you can delete the /iTunes/iTunes Music folder.
