I have been into system preferences/sound/output/Toshiba TV HMDI - but it says it the selected device has no output controls. Any ideas? Thanks!

How old is your MBP? MBP's earlier than mid-2010 do not support audio over the mini-displayport.
I brought it in June 2010.
Click on the Apple in top left of menu bar, and select 'About this Mac'. Click the 'more info' button and read what it says in light grey letters just under the big black "MacBook Pro". Check it matches one of the ones cited in this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
OK looks as though my model doesnt support audio. Thats annoying as I took my laptop into the store and asked them exactly what i needed! Do you have any advice on what I should get in order to play audio? Thanks so much for your time!
You will need to run an audio cable from the headphone socket of the MBP to the audio input of the TV. For the MBP end you need a stereo mini-jack. For the TV end it depends what connectors are on the TV. You will have to have a look on the connection panel on the TV or in the manual to check what you need. You will obviously only get stereo sound, not 5.1 surround sound, using this method.

Sorry to bother you again, but I brought the audio cable for my mac book pro to my TV and still no sound!!! This is getting very frustrating!! I have played around with the settings in system pref. I have restored my TV to factory settings. Dont know what else to try?? Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
What is the make and model of your TV? Give me the exact model number please because I'm going to look for the manual online.
Its a Toshiba LCD. Model 32C110U
