my imac is taking forever to start up

My Imac is less than a year old and in the past month it has been taking at least twenty minutes on the pale blue screen before you get to log my password and the computer to start has anyone else had this problem and what causes this to happen?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

This can be caused by a HD that is too full or is failing. Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode using the instructions in your owners manual. If you cannot find the manual you can look at a copy online by clicking Support in the upper right of this page and then click Manuals and navigate to your model iMac. If no errors are found after the first pass in Extended Mode run it again 2 to 3 more times to be sure.

Also take a look at your Login Items. You may have lots of stuff set to start when you log in. You will find this under System Preferences - Users - Login Items. To remove items highlight them and click the - symbol below them.
