how do I play .avi files on itunes

For me, VideoDrive wins hands down.

1) Go to the Queue tab in Preferences and click the "create hot folder" button. Choose whatever folder you want as an 'inbox' folder for new videos

2) Select if you want to process new videos immediately or after fixed intervals (I prefer the latter and set the number of minutes to 120)

3) Check "Never ask confirmation to save metadata". Otherwise it will show you a confirmation window blocking the import process.

4) Check "Automatically requeue videos". Otherwise if you are copying/downloading big files, VideoDrive will try to import them but fail as they are not complete yet.

That's it! As soon as you have a new file, VideoDrive will do it's thing and put the file in iTunes.

Hey everyone, I have the newest version of VideoDrive and a handful of AVI files I want to put into my iTunes library so I can stream them directly to my New iPad / Apple TV 3. When I select the new ATV option in VideoDrive it goes through flawlessly, finds the correct metadata takes about 45 minutes or so to run through its thing, and then an error pops up saying it was unable to convert, quicktime crashed act ect. If anyone has any tips or advice please let me know! Thanks so much!

According to Apple official website, iTunes only works with QuickTime and MPEG-4 Movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player. Therefore, if you try to import .avi movie to iTunes for syncing, it will end in fail in importing AVI video to iTunes let alone transfer this AVI file to iPad, iPhone, iPod.

In order to successfully import AVI files to iTunes, we have to convert this AVI video to iTunes compatible video format like MP4.

Plenty of iTunes questions have been asked in this forum and the site isn't exclusive to Mac users, I presume your clever enough to realize this.

Obviously the question was intended for a Mac user. Do you have nothing better to do than repy to messages that don't concern you? Just becasue the forum is not exclusive to Mac users doesn't mean they don't constatly use it.

Maybe you go to error forum, Just install Perian, they released a new version two days ago thats even more compatible with Lion. Or use VLC. iTunes just is not designed at all to handle any non-native filetypes. Certainly not video files.

Download and use MPEG Streamclip. You may be prompted to install Perian when opening the movies.

I exported my video file to quicktime through MPEG Streamline. Now when I attempt to drop my video file into iTunes it lights up like it will be accepted, but it does not appear inside iTunes. Do you have any suggestions?

I downloaded Perian, now quicktime will play avi files. But now it won't allow me to play the files on ITUNES. Any suggestions?

Convert the file data to H.264/AAC compression formats in an MOV, MP4, or M4V file container using QT 7 Pro, QT X, GarageBand, MPEG Streamclip, or similar QT-based app or use any compatible third-party commercial or free converter containing its own built-in codecs.

I installed VideoDrive, and to my dissapointment, It took about 15 minutes to convert the file. And more too my dismay, I get twenty free conversions before I have to purshase the product.

So use a free conversion alternative like HandBrake which is available for both Mac OS and Windows OS users. As to conversion times, the H.264 codec is very CPU intensive. Depending on the power of your system, the encode matrix dimensions of your file, and specific settings used, it can take a long time to convert files. I usually recommend setting up a batch conversion queue and let them convert while you sleep.

What do you really mean here? If "exported" using MPEG Streamclip, then to what compression formats and settings? If you merely copied the AVI data to an MOV file container, then what audio and video compression formats were actually copied to the MOV file container?

Milk is still milk whether it is in a bottle, a carton, a glass, a cup, or a mug. In a similar manner, if your AVI compressed data is not iTunes compatible in the AVI file container, then it will not be iTunes compatible in an MOV file container. What is probably happening here is that iTunes sees an MOV (or MP4 or M4V) file extension and indicates it is quite willing to import the file—UNTIL IT LOOKS AT THE DATA ACTUALLY CONTAINED IN THE FILE. Then iTunes changes its mind and terminates file import.

Do you have any suggestions?

As has been stated many times in this discussion already, if you won't or can't determine what kind of compressed data is in your AVI source file in order to use possible alternative solutions, "CONVERT OR BE DOOMED TO CONTINUED IMPORT FAILURE!" Use any compatible free or commercial app you want... but convert your files to "standards" compliant H.264/AAC compressed data in MOV, MP4, or M4V file types. Do it in the foreground or background, as single files or in batches, while you are working on the computer or while you are doing something else—BUT CONVERT!

I have the exact same problem, I am trying to import videos to iTunes and having trouble.

I used VideoDrive to convert all the avi files to m4v files, and all of the videos subsequently showed up in a new folder alongside my music folder for iTunes (this had previously been empty).

However, when VideoDrive was processing all the videos, it gave a warning message for each one saying that the "file could not be opened..." and something about "software may need to be added..."

Now, all the movies show up in iTunes, but I can not open or play any of them.

I have the exact same problem with iTunes, How do you convert a VLC video into iTunes. I got a video i recorded off VLC and need to know how to import it into iTunes under the video section. Can anyone help me?

Very few people know that VLC player can be used to convert videos from one format to other. I recommend this as you need not install any other software.

I am not computer wizz. I will not jailbreak my apple tv. Air Video Server seems hard to me.
