No sound/audio on mpg video file from camcorder

Been getting video from a Sony Handycam for business purposes. Video was taken in the standard HD format, not MP4. The files were converted to mpg. I can see the video play perfectly but there is no sound. The originals can also be converted to WMV which work with sound but suck to export once editing is done in Final Cut.

Why is there no sound on the MPG video file? Is there a setting/plugin I need to change/install to fix?

Thanks

Well, I managed to find a "work around." Finally found another thread on here regarding a similar issue. By downloading a free "video converter," you can convert the problem mpg file to DV or MPEG4 and the audio is now there. Not sure what this does to the the quality but for web use I think it will be fine.
