I had the same problem. Make sure, regardless of how you are burning the CDs, that the music files are WAV and not MP3 files, otherwise they will not play on older car stereos unless they are MP3-friendly.

No, the source format does not matter that direction. If you select audio CD the output will be audio CD format. If you select mp3 CD you will need mp3 format files originally.
does it play in another cd-player?
Any possibility that you burned it as a data cd instead of an audio cd?
It would help to have more details.
1) Is this a data CD (mp3), or is it an audio CD? Not all car players can do data.
2) How old is the car player? What kind of CD is this? Not all players can handle CD-RW. Older ones might not be able to play burned CDs at all.
3) Have you tried different brands of CD? Have you tried a slower burn speed?
to burn it as an audio cd:
make a playlist with the tracks you want
Menu > File > Burn Playlist To Disc
If you just burnt the mp3 files onto disc from the finder then it is a data cd, you can play this in a computer but not in a cd player
Some newer CD players (including those in cars) can play mp3 CDs, but you should check before assuming it does.
iTunes 10 for Mac: Create your own MP3 CDs - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1748
I changed the burn speed to 16x and the CD worked fine.
No 16x does not work either
Using iMac mountain lion
Memorex cdrw
VW golf cd player
Worked fine on a £200 laptop
But not on a £2000 iMac
I advise everyone not to buy apple junk
It gives an error in car
Burned audio not mp3
Using iTunes
As burn via finder does not work
What's the point of that feature if it fails every time @ approx 8%
Tried all ways on 10+ CDs always fails in finder
Or won't play in car from iTunes
I don't own another cd player to test on
Figured that if I spent £2000 on a top of the range computer it would burn CDs of all kind and they would play on all devices
Apparently not...
I also own a now obsolete ipad1
And an i4s 13months old that turns itself off at 10-20% of battery remaining and gives a flat battery animation but it immediately boots on connecting a charger, no waiting for charge, and then shows the 10-20% of power it had before turning off
Like I said junk
Wonder if any of the people who made my devices committed suicide in china?
that is something that really bothers me
Apart from the devices not working properly of course!
Try using a CDR, not a CDRW.
Most of us are not digital illiterates. I burned an audio cd, (no mp3, no cdrw, no DVDs XDDD) and it did not play in the car. This task is a no-brainer with Windows.
It's Apple. You probably need to pay for a license, a car compatible CDRW external drive, or some story like that XD to make the disc work on your car. Same problem here, I ended up using my good old reliable windows laptop.
