Same sort of thread just the other day. The answer, after the same sort of back and forth, was that she was connected to a jambox. I didn't think a particular remote device could stick an icon up there, but that's what the lady's was the other day.
Msw. Do you have something connected via Bluetooth?

Just a friendly comment that the list described on this link is incomplete. If you are a rep of the site, you should update it to include additional symbols, such as the personal hotspot icon, the LTE icon, and the bluetooth device battery level icon.
Should be the bluetooth connection icon - grey when BT is on but nothing actively paired, and bold when something is paired. If you turn BT off, it should disappear.
(wacko forum software - when I replied, all I saw on my iPad was the op's post and no dates or times. Only after I posted did the whole thread show up ??? And that's not the first time that has happened either)
This symbol showed up on my wife's phone after she was connected to mini- Bose Speaker
