Just bought a Canon T2i DSLR and I could really use some help. When I upload any format of video to FCP X, it is choppy. I'm using a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6.8 and a Class 10 SD card. Video format: H.264 Format (.MOV file). Thanks!

Transcode the camera footage to Pro Res 422 (optimise it).
H.264 is very highly compressed and takes a great deal of processor power to play back.
Also, hide your audio waveforms (use the switch icon on the bottom right of your storyline) to select a format with no waveforms when you're not editing audio.

Ok. I've tried converting this using MPEG Streamclip but the program didnt have Pro Res 422 to convert it to? Is there a different program I can use? Thanks for your help.
Of course it does . . .
File > Export to QuickTime - then select Pro Res 422 from the dropdown at the very top of the window.

You don't need another program. You can transcode it inside FCP. Select the clips, right-click, transcode media.

I take the footage straight (H.264) from a T3i and I have no trouble with it in FCPX in regards to how it plays or edits - no stutters, no issues with the format itself
What are the specs on the computer you are using and the settings upon import of the files into FCPX?
I still can't find the Prores still?

You aren't actually playing the video off your SD card, are you? If so, that's your problem, tranfer the files to your hard drive. If you computer is powerful enough, it should be able to handle the h.264 video without having to convert it to Pro Res (this was touted as one of the major advantages to FCP X). If your computer is not powerful enough, you may need to convert it. I edit my stuff shot on my t2i without converting, but I have an 8-core Mac.

No. I put it on my desktop. The SD card is not in my computer anymore. Then I'm importing into FCP X. The playback is still choppy. I tried the transcode and that didn't help. I only have 4 GB memory. I don't know what else to do.

Also, what are your settings when you do a NEW PROJECT - is it set on "Set AUTOmatically based on first clip" or is it set to a "Custom" setting you created?
I assume when you play just the file on your desktop before import into FCPX it is not choppy

I've been doing Automatic based on the first clip. I messed around with the custom but couldn't figure it out. I didn't exactly know what to do for it. Thanks for help so far everyone.
Ok so I think I figured it out. I used MPEG Streamclip. In order to get the Prores family to come up in the application, I had to download this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396. From there, I converted it and then uploaded it to FCP X. It appears to be no longer choppy. Thanks for all the help everyone.
