Aperture Import Date Problem

I cannot give you a satisfying answer, but as far as I could see travelling through time zones it has to do with that. Mine were split during an OZ travel the same as yours, cannot remember the split time of the date, but somewhere -11 hours (camera set to UTC). During travel it was quite annoying having smart albums by date and obviously always hald a day before and half a day afterwards in these albums. Back home the behaviour changed and the pics became sorted the right way. Although I am satisfied two big question marks are still there:

1. I most obviously don't understand what the right time setting for aperture at import should be

2. If I wanted to split by days I cannot do this with the sort date feature (the small calender view) as precisely as I wanted (the above described behaviour might change if i change the time zone again)

As a work around -- Don't autosplit projects.

Bring into aperture. Select that project. Bring up filter HUD (dark grey icon with magnifying glass next to search box)

Add Calendar as a filter (Under add rule) Click on the day you want.

At this point you have choices:

1. Create an album from selected photos.

2. Create smart album using this rule.

3. Manually move these photos into a new project.

Hope this helps.

And if you still want to have the images in projects you can filter as Sherwood suggested and then instead of making an Album from the selection you could make a new project and have the selected images moved into that project.

That;s OK.

BTW I'm not sure if it is in that thread or another (this comes up a lot) but I have a script I use on import (Applescript actions in the import window) that splits the images by date and places them in projects named by date.

To be honest while its something you want to avoid if at all possible its not the end of the world. I've been forced to do it on a number of occasions and haven't had anything really bad happen. Do you have a recent backup? That helps to relieve the anxiety 😉

If you do force quit it make sure the very next thing you do is run a library repair. Hold own the option and command keys while starting Aperture to get the repair window. Once that is done (and it may take a while to run) and Aperture comes up look for a project Recovered Photos (or something like that, its been a while since the last time its happened to me) . If that is there there were images in your library that the repair function found but couldn't figure out where they belonged. You'll need to sort them out yourself.

Again, if you haven;t already, start a good backup routine for your libraries. That will go a long way towards alleviating your stomach distress

So, if it did damage something, you're pretty certain it will show up in that repair? Should I do that any time I have to force it to quit?

To the first question it might. It really all depends on the situation. There is a good chance that nothing will be missing also.

To the second yes, anytime you have to o something to the library out of the ordinary you should do a repair.

And to address the backup question, your situation is why I really like the vault capability in Aperture. Depending on the size of your library you get an inexpensive USB drive 500gb should probably do it. Then you plug it into your machine and setup a vault on it. The first time will take a while. After that whenever you import or do any major work you hit the vault button in Aperture. If you're doing it fairly regularly the entire operation will take a few minutes, get a cup of coffee. It's quick and painless and you minimize your stomach distress.
