Aperture Import Date Problem

I'm importing photos and have noticed repeatedly that when I tell it to automatically split projects, it's not breaking them in the right place. It would appear that all photos before 11am are thrown onto the previous date. I have played with (and double-checked) the time zones and they appear to be in sync.

Tonight, I have discovered a new wrinkle to this. I'm rebuilding my database and I knew this problem was happening, so I've been manually (ugh!) choosing each group and putting it in the proper place. Now, I can see that the above is still happening, but now it's doing this:

For example, I have 10 images showing up as January 1st. The first 5 are really January 1st, but the next 5 are January 2nd before 11am. I download the first 5 images to a January 1st folder and when I go back to import, the next 5 are NOW showing up as January 2nd as they should have to start with.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? I'm going SO crazy having to manually sort these in the right place. I'm on the first of 3 SD cards I need to import and it's going to be about 7 months of photos and 30gb of data. If anyone knows a solution, I'm all ears! 🙂

Oh, and I went to the genius bar last week about this with no luck. I'm hoping there's a solution out there now and that I don't have to just report it and wait for a bug fix...

Thanks!

I cannot give you a satisfying answer, but as far as I could see travelling through time zones it has to do with that. Mine were split during an OZ travel the same as yours, cannot remember the split time of the date, but somewhere -11 hours (camera set to UTC). During travel it was quite annoying having smart albums by date and obviously always hald a day before and half a day afterwards in these albums. Back home the behaviour changed and the pics became sorted the right way. Although I am satisfied two big question marks are still there:

1. I most obviously don't understand what the right time setting for aperture at import should be

2. If I wanted to split by days I cannot do this with the sort date feature (the small calender view) as precisely as I wanted (the above described behaviour might change if i change the time zone again)

I have not traveled at all. I checked the time zones since it wasn't importing correctly, but all my photos have been in Central Time Zone in America. Last night I found THIS on another support community post:

"Are you using Automatically split projects in the Import window? If so you then the behavior you are seeing is correct as far as Aperture is concerned.

The split projects setting splits projects based on time not date. That is all images within the first 24 hours of the first image imported are considered day 1, the images in the second 24 hours would be day 2, etc."

I think this is my problem and I am completely frustrated about it. I have sent in an Aperture Feedback and hope that they resolve this soon. I also am praying that there's some way around it and someone will pipe up with that here. 🙂

As a work around -- Don't autosplit projects.

Bring into aperture. Select that project. Bring up filter HUD (dark grey icon with magnifying glass next to search box)

Add Calendar as a filter (Under add rule) Click on the day you want.

At this point you have choices:

1. Create an album from selected photos.

2. Create smart album using this rule.

3. Manually move these photos into a new project.

Hope this helps.

That;s OK.

BTW I'm not sure if it is in that thread or another (this comes up a lot) but I have a script I use on import (Applescript actions in the import window) that splits the images by date and places them in projects named by date.

Search the list here for a discussion of this or have a look at my web site (URL in my profile)

Thanks! I'm going to take a good hard look at your stuff after I get a slideshow (due in 10 days that I haven't started) done. I have an unrelated question I'm hoping you can answer quickly tonight. I'm importing the last 35 photos and it seems to have gotten hung up. I'm going to let it try to sort itself out for a while, but I'm wondering if I cancel the task through the activity window will that force aperture to quit or just cancel the import? Will it corrupt the library at all? I SO want this rebuild to be over and I keep hitting more roadblocks...

It's still out to lunch. 😟 I tried hitting "cancel task" on one of the import items last night right before I went to bed and now it seems completeliy hung up and still not closed. I think I'll have to force quit in a bit (need to get my kids off to school, so I'll probably wait about 40 minutes, so hopefully you get this soon. I'm SO paranoid about force quit because I've heard things about people losing photos and I'm just terrified I would lose some and not know it since I have so many. Do you know if it would only damage the directories it's working on right now. This is making me sick to my stomach.

To be honest while its something you want to avoid if at all possible its not the end of the world. I've been forced to do it on a number of occasions and haven't had anything really bad happen. Do you have a recent backup? That helps to relieve the anxiety 😉

If you do force quit it make sure the very next thing you do is run a library repair. Hold own the option and command keys while starting Aperture to get the repair window. Once that is done (and it may take a while to run) and Aperture comes up look for a project Recovered Photos (or something like that, its been a while since the last time its happened to me) . If that is there there were images in your library that the repair function found but couldn't figure out where they belonged. You'll need to sort them out yourself.

Again, if you haven;t already, start a good backup routine for your libraries. That will go a long way towards alleviating your stomach distress

good luck

I generally have a backup going. I blew the library away on Saturday night and have just been rebuilding it since then (and should have backed up midstream apparently), but I'm tight on space and my husband has to do that on another machine in our house and he's not home until tonight, so I hadn't done it yet.

So, if it did damage something, you're pretty certain it will show up in that repair? Should I do that any time I have to force it to quit?

I was just trying to get all my pictures back in one place quickly so I could do this slideshow and then go from there. Thank you for answering all these quickly! I think I really want to pick your brain when I'm done with this. 🙂

To the first question it might. It really all depends on the situation. There is a good chance that nothing will be missing also.

To the second yes, anytime you have to o something to the library out of the ordinary you should do a repair.

And to address the backup question, your situation is why I really like the vault capability in Aperture. Depending on the size of your library you get an inexpensive USB drive 500gb should probably do it. Then you plug it into your machine and setup a vault on it. The first time will take a while. After that whenever you import or do any major work you hit the vault button in Aperture. If you're doing it fairly regularly the entire operation will take a few minutes, get a cup of coffee. It's quick and painless and you minimize your stomach distress.

good luck
