4s 64 GB Excessive 3G Data Usage while logged into Wifi net

While charging in docking station and logged into Wifi network, my 4s consumes 2-3 MB 3G data per hour, i.e. 20-30 MB/night. Seems to be happening since I started using iTunes Match. Resetting my network connections solved the problem until I added new music to iTunes. Now back to excessive nightly 3G data usage despite concurrent Wifi connection. Apple support says I am the only one with the problem.

Anyone else out there - or anyone with a solution? Thanks

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

Do you have Wi-Fi sync enabled in iTunes? How about your iCloud settings; are you backing everything up to iCloud?

Also tried turning mobile network off in /iCloud/Documents and Data, but did not help.

Turning mobile data off manually totally when in docking station and connected to WiFi stopped the data usage - but isn't really a good fix.

Not exactly the kind of data usage that is helpful with a limited data plan.

What about that usage is excessive? Based on the numbers provided, the device is using a little under 21mb/day or about 630mb/month. That's not excessive. It's certainly not 20-30mb per night as originally stated.

3mb/hour could easily be legitimate data usage.

Based on the postings here... I'm not really certain that I understand what the issue is.

If Cellular Data is turned off, all data usage stops, correct?

If Wi-Fi is turned on and connect, Cellular Data is on, and the device is connected to external power, all data usage stops, correct?

If this is not legitimate data usage, it could be an email "stuck" trying to send constantly, it could be iTunes Match (but I'm skeptical of that), it could be a rogue app.

Does the docking station that the device is being placed into provided external power? Does it actually show the device charging when in this docking station? Keep in mind, that even with Wi-Fi turned on and connected, if the device is not connected to external power, the Wi-Fi antenna shuts down when the device goes to sleep.

A fix is a fix. If it works for you, then just use it.

I also thought it would be a lot more as well. That seems pretty normal. Your iPhone is ALWAYS connected to a data network, unless you (the user) specifiy say so otherwise (with Wi-Fi, Airplane mode, etc.). This isn't really any different with other smartphones, either.

The data from 19:55 on 20.02 until 7:55 on 21.02 is only the night 20/21 February, and adds up to 28.6 MB, so pretty much between 20-30 MB per night.

That is mobile data use when I did not use the iPhone, while it was in the original Apple charging station, connected to an original Apple power plug, showing that it is being charged, and connected to a WiFi network setup by an Airport Extreme base station. I actually tried a second (also Apple) charger, without the docking station, that also charged the iPhone, but the mobile data usage remained.

I do not see why my mobile phone should use 28.6 MB of mobile data per night while it is actually connected to the WiFi network.

@ diesel vdub: If Wi-Fi is turned on and connected, Cellular Data is on, and the device is connected to external power, mobile data usage DOES NOT stop, but instead is using the mobile data as described above. That is the problem. During the day, when the iPhone is not connected to a WiFi net, this usage does not occur (see usage 19:55 and 7:55, before and after it connected to WiFi network).

@ diesel vdub: I have manually killed all apps before putting it in the docking station. If it's a rogue app, it must be one that I cannot kill. Even if it is a rogue up, should it not use the WiFi connection?

@ extremecarbon: Current usage would add up to more than 500 MB per month for actually no usage by myself - the usage during the day when I actually use the phone and its internet connection is on top. I am not aware of other smartphones that do that, nor did my 3G.

Thanks for your support!

My Mom is having the same issue on her iphone 4 which we just updated to iOS 6 - i monitored the cellular usage and in the course of one hour there was 16mb of data being sent - and this was having the phone sitting there doing nothing!

She is a 200mb plan with ATT so this has caused us some overages - she never had this happen prior to iOS6.

I've modified some settings and will continue to monitor this - but something is very odd here - just don't know what the solution is.

Sep 30, 2012 2:28 PM in response to Mike-Mpls

Ill add to this to say I saw that my mom had 6 email messages in hour outbox that were unsent - I have a feeling these messages with photos were continually trying to be sent but could not be - due to some confusion on an @me.com or @icloud.com set up issue that occurred after we upgraded her iphone.

I'll keep monitoring the usage and see what happens.

I have an i Phone 4S using i OS6. Via Telstra in Australia

Used 1.5 gb of data last Sunday!! Crazy

Wasn't connected to any Wi Fi at the time either.

Complained to Telstra and they are going to waive excess data charges

Complained to Apple on the phone, they are aware of the problems and their Engineers are working on a fix.

In the meantime I was advised to turn off Cellular data when not needning it.

I am on Day 5 of my AT&T billing cycle.

I have spent the last 3 days in Mexico in Airplane mode. So that's 3 our of 5 days without using cellular data. I am now up to 355MB of data transfered though for the day today since my return and I have been on my home WiFi. I'm at a loss to understand how that can be when that was my usage for a month all these years!

In 4 years of iPhone I've never had to worry about my data usage before now. With iOS 6 I've had to reset my network settings, disable anything but essential apps from using data, disabled iCloud, and the list goes on, all this while checking my data usage daily and taking pictures of usage every day. That's just not the way it should be.

Oct 20, 2012 2:38 PM in response to Mat4s64GB

Here's mine for a few days. Everything on phone set to wifi only. I'm not doing the cloud or music match. Usually the phone is plugged in charging and on my wifi network. A couple of times it was in my pocket and I could feel the phone getting really hot. One weird thing is I reset my usage statistics a few days ago. The ATT site says I've sent about 700mb in that time while my phone says I've only sent 11.2mb. I usually use 200mb\month. I'm up to 4g this month.
