Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Try a Reset
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

Thank you so much for your help..I was worried about losing data, but hopefully this little trick will do the job!
I have signalled a 'helpful answer' - it is also probably a correct answer but I don't know!
Thanks anyway
Caroline

It worked! Thanks King Penguin.... the Apple logo is showing!!! Hurrah! am lost without this fab machine!
Glad it worked 🙂 . The reset seems to fix a number of problems - so it might be worth remembering if you have a similar problem in the future.
Another 'fix' that is useful to remember is that you can close apps via the taskbar (which you can't do if the screen is frozen but you can do if it's just one app that is stuck) : from the home screen (i.e. not with the app that you want to close 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of an app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
