Not on start up just randomly through the day - sounds like it's telling me I've just received something but I can't see what ??

Just English - is that not PC anymore (No, I don't swear)
Most likely they are notifications from something like iChat or Skype. Apps like those make noises when friends come online or go offline, which happens seemingly randomly througout the day.
All chat apps do that, I guess. When I (rarely) start Adium, it has the same sounds.
