iCal getting Outlook appointments

I have to use Microsoft Outlook at work. It is a seperate account from my iCloud account so there should be no interaction between the two. Yet I have discovered that appointments I receive via Outlook (which is set as the default mail and calendar client) are showing up in iCal (they are not associated with a defined iCal calendar, they are grey and just there). Worse yet, I have discovered that deleting these from iCal deletes them from Outlook. This is not a good thing!! How do I disassociate iCal and Outlook so this no longer happens? And I have checked and the iCal option to "Automatcially retreive CalDAV invitations from Mail" is disabled.

Help!!

Thank you.

I'm stuck....I just bought an Iphone, and I have an Ipad but never did the "cloud" thing. To fully migrate off of my pc and my outlook 2003, I'd like to prepare the data in Outlook for calendar and contacts, but I can't find what you mention: Outlook-Preferences-General-Sync Services...the menu I have in Preferences is more limited. Can you point me in the direction of preparing the data and then preparing the IPad/Iphone to be synched to? Grateful for anything.
